Work one-on-one with Dr. Johann Baard to find and treat the root cause of fatigue, hormonal imbalance, weight gain and chronic symptoms—not just the symptoms themselves. In-person in Cape Town, or virtually anywhere in South Africa.
“Your body doesn’t fail one organ at a time — it fails as a system. But the more specialists a complex patient sees, the more fragmented their care becomes. I’m not here to add another opinion to the pile. I’m here to bring them together and treat what’s really driving all of it.”— Dr. Johann Baard
We treat the cause, not just the chart
Conventional care is essential for acute illness and emergencies. But when you're left with a "normal" blood panel and symptoms that won't go away, a different approach is needed — one that looks at the whole picture.
| Approach | Conventional Care | Functional Medicine at GenX |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Disease and pathology | Health and prevention |
| Strategy | Treats the symptoms | Treats the underlying cause |
| Protocol | Standardised for everyone | Individualised to your biology |
| Orientation | Reactive — waits for disease | Proactive — optimises before you get sick |

Dr. Johann Baard
Dr. Baard is a medical doctor specialising in anti-ageing and functional medicine, treating patients both in-person at GenX Clinics in Cape Town and virtually nationwide through his practice, KronoDeus. His approach blends conventional medical training with an individualised, root-cause philosophy of care.
My path here wasn't a straight line. I always wanted to be an anti-ageing researcher — I believe reversing ageing is the cornerstone of preventing almost every disease. I worked overseas on cruise ships to fund my studies, then completed my Master's in Human Genetics at the University of Cape Town. Years spent running pharmaceutical trials as a research officer taught me how slowly the research world moves, and how little room it left for the questions I actually wanted answered — so I moved into clinical practice, reasoning I could pursue that research myself, through my patients. After completing my Fellowship in Anti-Ageing and Functional Medicine through A4M in the United States, I've spent every year since helping patients on their health journey with a scientific, holistic approach — always working toward the same goal: reversing what I still believe is the true driver of disease.
Ageing isn't just a symptom of disease — I believe it's the cause. Reversing it is the work I've built my whole career around.

What it's like to work with Dr. Baard
"I finally felt like someone was looking at the bigger picture rather than treating each symptom in isolation. The consultation was incredibly thorough, and the plan was explained in a way that actually made sense. I came away with a much better understanding of my health, my lifestyle, and the areas we could work on to improve my energy and overall wellbeing."
"What impressed me most was how personalised the entire process felt. We went through my blood results, nutrition, sleep, stress, training and family history before putting together a plan. It wasn’t a generic approach — everything had a reason behind it. The follow-up and attention to detail have been excellent."
"I’d been looking for a doctor who took a more proactive approach to health rather than simply waiting for something to go wrong. The experience was completely different from a typical medical appointment. We looked at hormones, metabolic health, nutrient status, sleep and long-term risk factors, and I left with a clear roadmap for improving my health over the years ahead."

Common questions
What's the difference between this and my GP?
Dr. Baard is a fully qualified medical doctor, so he can be your GP — routine check-ups, scripts, referrals, acute concerns, all of it. What he adds on top is more consultation time, a broader functional medicine toolkit, and a whole-body, root-cause approach. That's why patients increasingly choose him as their primary doctor rather than just a specialist they see occasionally: when your health picture gets more complex — several conditions overlapping, persistent symptoms that don't add up, hormonal or metabolic issues — his ability to oversee that complexity goes further than a standard GP visit allows.
Can I do this virtually if I don't live in Cape Town?
Yes. Dr. Baard consults with patients nationwide via secure video call, in addition to in-person visits at GenX Clinics in Gardens, Cape Town. Virtual consultations run through doxy.me/kronodeus — no app or account needed, just click the link at your appointment time.
Do I need to bring existing test results?
No need to bring results from local labs — Dr. Baard can access your previous results directly from Ampath, Pathcare and Lancet. If you've had functional or specialty testing done overseas or with another practitioner, those won't be on those systems, so please email them to drbaard@kronodeus.co.za — it's very useful to have them ahead of your consultation.
Will I need to stop my current medication or supplements before seeing you?
You don't have to. There's no need to stop your current medication or supplements before seeing Dr. Baard — in fact, it's genuinely useful if you bring them along (or photos of the labels) to your consultation, so he can see exactly what you're taking and work out whether to add to, adjust, or improve your current stack as part of your personalised plan.
What is functional medicine?
Functional medicine is an individualised, root-cause approach to healthcare. Instead of only treating symptoms with a standardised protocol, it investigates why your body's systems are under strain in the first place, using your history, symptoms and relevant testing to build a personalised treatment plan.
Is functional medicine evidence-based, or is this alternative medicine?
We describe our approach as evidence-based functional medicine — we stay as close to the evidence as possible, even for treatments that fall outside conventional therapy. Many of the conditions we see respond poorly to standard treatment alone, so we look for safe, personalised options, conventional or not, that have shown to work. It's true that most non-conventional therapies have fewer large randomised trials behind them than pharmaceuticals do, but that doesn't mean they can't work well for you on an individual basis.
How soon will I start feeling better?
That's naturally very condition-specific, so it's hard to promise one timeline for everyone. What you can expect from Dr. Baard's approach is that every interaction aims to move you a little closer to feeling better, even while the deeper root-cause investigation continues in the background and can take longer to fully resolve. With his experience, Dr. Baard understands that real symptom relief needs to happen alongside that root-cause work, not instead of it — so as he investigates the underlying drivers of your condition, he'll also actively manage your symptoms along the way, rather than asking you to simply wait it out until every result is back.
How do I know if Dr. Baard can help with my condition?
Functional medicine takes a whole-body, systems-based approach — your body doesn't experience symptoms in isolation, so most conditions have contributing factors that reach beyond the one system where symptoms show up. That means functional medicine can usually help with any medical issue or condition, at least in part, even where it isn't a full replacement for specialist or emergency care. The best way to know for certain whether it's the right fit for your specific situation is to book a free 10-minute introductory call — a no-obligation conversation to discuss your condition and whether functional medicine can help.
How do I know if Dr. Baard has experience with my specific condition?
The most honest way to find out is to ask him directly. Book a free 10-minute introductory call and Dr. Baard will give you a straight answer about his experience with your specific condition — so you know exactly what you're getting before committing to a full consultation.
I know I'll need more regular contact and support than a typical patient — can you accommodate that?
Absolutely — and we'd rather you tell us that upfront than feel like you're asking too much. Some patients navigating complex or multiple overlapping conditions need closer, more frequent contact than a once-off appointment allows, and that's completely understandable. Once you're an existing patient, GenX Direct Membership gives you unlimited WhatsApp or email access to your care team, overseen by Dr. Baard, with a guaranteed response within 24 hours on business days — a level of ongoing access most doctors simply can't offer. It's R1,968/month (minimum 6 months, consultations billed separately), and it exists specifically for patients who want that extra reassurance of being properly heard.
Will medical aid cover the consultation and treatment?
Unfortunately not — medical aids don't currently cover functional medicine consultations or treatment, so these are paid out of pocket. Certain lab tests may be claimable separately depending on your specific plan, so it's worth checking with your medical aid directly.
